Communication

Inform your line manager

Even before registering as an Education Ambassador, it's important to discuss your intentions with your line manager. Take this opportunity to help them understand what your commitment would be and the benefits to BAE Systems and also your own personal development.

By establishing their buy-in at the outset, it will mean that the process of booking your time for education activities in the future will be much easier.

Booking your time

Whilst BAE Systems is totally commited to supporting the Education Ambassador Programme, for those Ambassadors who are direct nomination and need to book their time weekly, there can be potential problems where no specific code is available.

Your line manager should be able to advise you on the best solution, or you can consult your local EPSG member.

What if my manager objects?

Some Education Ambassadors experience resistance from their line manager to taking time out of work to support these activities.

Ultimately, your local management are the ones who determine if you can do this and how much time you can spend on Ambassador duties. There may be local variations, so check to see what is the accepted protocol on your site.

Registering Education Ambassador activity

Please ensure that your Education Ambassador work is included in your PDR as part of your Personal Development Plan. This could be from a personal effectiveness perspective as part of a competency framework development, or from a personal development aspect such as self-confidence, building trust and encouraging teamwork.

The role and activities of an Education Ambassador are so wide that they support many personal development needs. Having built this into an agreed PDR it's a simple matter to account for your time to a training diversion, or, in the case of line manager resistance, to point to your agreed PDR.
