Technical Apprentice

The qualifications you need

You'll need four or more GCSEs at grades A to C (or equivalent), including English, Maths and a Science subject.

What the programme entails

For the first nine months you'll receive your training off site. Once you return to Rochester, you'll work across a wide range of technical departments, including Operations, Quality, Support and Engineering.

Working as part of a team, you'll undertake tasks such as testing, soldering and the use of PCs.

The length of the programme

Training usually takes three years to complete. At this point you'll have spent most of your apprenticeship receiving on-the-job training and have achieved an appropriate NVQ.

The qualifications you can earn

As an engineering apprentice you'll work towards the Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) qualification, which is a Level 2 NVQ that'll prepare you for the workplace. Following this you will take an NVQ Level 3 and Key Skills at Level 3 within BAE Systems.

You'll also study one day a week for a technical certificate at the local college, which will give you further knowledge and understanding of your job.

Progressing to further education

After completing their apprenticeship, many people choose to study up to degree and Chartered status.

At Rochester, the Technical Apprenticeship scheme is accredited by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and offers school leavers the opportunity to obtain a professionally-recognised qualification in engineering.
