Submarine solutions


Submarine Solutions is a key component of BAE Systems' naval activity and is the prime contractor responsible for the design, build and initial in-service support of the 7,400 tonne vessels that make up the Astute Class Submarine fleet.

As well as our shipyard at Barrow in Furness—which is designated as a Submarine Centre of Excellence—work also takes place at Farnborough and Weymouth, and our class integration facilities at Ash Vale.

The length of the programme

Training usually takes between 2 and 3.5 years to complete, and is a combination of on and off the job training.

The qualifications you can earn

You can undertake an Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 and Apprenticeship Level 2 in Engineering, which offer opportunities in both craft and technical roles.

Craft Apprentice

The qualifications you need

You'll need five GCSEs at grade A to E in English, Maths, Science, plus two other subjects

What the programme entails

The Craft Apprentice programme is broken down into three phases. Phase 1 will see you undertake a Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) qualification, Phase 2 is spent in the workplace where you'll develop further skills in your chosen role, and Phase 3 is predominantly about developing competence against national standards as you work towards an NVQ.

What you'll learn during Phase 1

In Phase 1 you'll undertake the Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) qualification, which is a Level 2 NVQ that'll help prepare you for the workplace.

This is completed full-time in an off the job environment and you'll complete your key skills of Application of number, Communications, Information Technology, Improving own Learning and Working with Others.

What you'll learn during Phase 2

Once in the workplace you'll begin a planned experience programme to develop further skills and knowledge in your chosen job role. This will be combined with the beginning of a technical certificate that will give you greater understanding of your job role.

What you'll learn during Phase 3

Phase 3 is predominantly about developing competence against national standards via the achievement of an NVQ.

During this phase, which usually lasts up to 18 months, you'll have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and be assessed against the occupational standards relevant to your specific role.

You'll also complete your technical certificate during this period.

Progressing to a higher technical certificate

On completion of your apprenticeship you'll have the opportunity to progress to a higher technical certificate.

Technical Apprentice

What the programme entails

The Technical Apprentice programme is broken down into three phases. Phase 1 will see you undertake a Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) qualification, Phase 2 is spent in the workplace where you'll develop further skills in your chosen role, and Phase 3 is predominantly about developing competence against national standards as you work towards an NVQ.

Each phase lasts a minimum of one year and in order to progress you must first successfully complete the targets set at the beginning of each phase.

What you'll learn during Phase 1

During Phase 1 of the programme you'll undertake the Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) qualification, a Level 2 NVQ that'll help prepare you for the workplace.

This is completed full-time in an off the job environment and you'll also complete your key skills of Application of number, Communications, Information Technology, Improving own Learning and Working with Others.

Technical apprentices will also begin their technical certificate at this stage.

What you'll learn during Phase 2

Once in the workplace you'll begin a planned experience programme to develop further skills and knowledge in your chosen job role. This will be combined with the technical certificate that'll give you further knowledge and understanding of your job role.

What you'll learn during Phase 3

Phase 3 is predominantly about developing competence against national standards via the achievement of an NVQ 3.

During this period, which usually lasts up to 18 months, you'll have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and be assessed against the occupational standards aligned to your specific job role.

Progressing to a higher technical certificate

On completion of your technical apprenticeship you'll also have the opportunity to progress to a higher technical certificate.
