The task unit 1

The first part of the task is about looking back through history and considering the part that engineering has played, as well as the contribution of BAE Systems within this.

Exploring the engineering world

  • 1.1

How did BAE Systems come to have such an important place in the engineering sector in your area?

  • 1.2

Explore three projects (historically or contemporary) where aero engineering at Warton or Salmesbury links with other BAE Systems sites throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.

In the past, the specification of a vehicle or craft has been influenced by what the occupant can endure or tolerate. Before autonomous systems (those which can operate without a human) were devised, there was little point in designing a vehicle or craft capable of enduring extreme conditions or speeds, without a human who could survive driving it!

  • 1.3a

Using the Heritage resources as a starting point, think about the examples in engineering design where the above has been true. How have these challenges been overcome?

  • 1.3b

Looking at any period of fifty years, write about which achievements in engineering have contributed to social and economic development.

  • 1.3c

Explore the job opportunities for you at BAE Systems, either as a young apprentice or as a graduate. Create a diagram that maps out your possible future career.
