What engineers do
There are many types of engineering, each of which requires different skills and ways of thinking in order to solve all sorts of problems.
These brief descriptions give you an idea of what the different types of engineers do:
- Manufacturing Engineering
-
What is it?
Manufacturing engineers make useful things from raw materials.
Where do they work?
Manufacturing engineers mostly work in industries which produce things. They design, build and maintain all the systems in factories, including automated and computer-controlled machines.
They get to see all the different stages of a process. For example, if they work in the manufacture of crisps, they see everything from the mountains of muddy potatoes at the start to the shiny packets of crisps at the end.
What manufacturing engineers do at BAE Systems
BAE Systems is the largest manufacturing company in the UK. Our manufacturing engineers are involved in a diverse range of high technology manufacturing, from manufacturing the new Joint Strike Fighter to building new land vehicles such as the Terrier for the Army.
- Mechanical Engineering
-
What is it?
Mechanical engineers design and make all the parts of machines that move, and could find themselves working on anything from a mountain bike to a space rocket.
Where do they work?
Mechanical engineers are vital to those industries that:
- Make machines with moving parts - such as cars, sewing machines or toy robots
- Use machines with moving parts - like the conveyor belts in television factories or the paddles that mix the ingredients in chocolate factories
What mechanical engineers do at BAE Systems
Mechanical engineers work on some of the UK's most complex engineering challenges, such as the new Astute Class nuclear submarine and the construction of the new Type 45 destroyer.
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
-
What is it?
Electrical engineering is all about generating and supplying power, and electronic engineering is about designing and making machines that use that power.
Where do they work?
Electrical engineers work in power stations and generating plants and electronic engineers can work in any industry that uses electricity or makes products that use electricity to control and programme processes in technology.
It's fair to say that wherever people are using electricity, you'll find electrical and electronic engineers behind the scenes.
What electrical and electronic engineers do at BAE Systems
BAE Systems electrical and electronic engineers are involved in designing and developing the electrical and electronic processes and controls that underpins the operation of our platforms, be it the control of propulsion on a nuclear submarine to the control of weapons systems on a Eurofighter Typhoon.
- Chemical Engineering
-
What is it?
Chemical engineers solve problems with chemistry. They look at the processes which change materials in a chemical and physical way and use the science behind these processes to find the best way to make the right products.
Where do they work?
Chemical engineers work mainly in the industries of:
- Fuel refining
- Food processing
- Brewing
- The production of materials and chemicals (anything from plastics and paint to pharmaceuticals)
What chemical engineers do at BAE Systems
Within the BAE Systems munitions business, chemicals engineers play a critical role helping design and manufacture the production of munitions needed by our Armed Forces.
- Systems Engineering
-
What is it?
Systems engineers plan how complex engineering projects should be designed and managed, and they ensure that the right engineering expertise is used at the right time.
Where do they work?
You'll find systems engineers working on any project that requires a broad range of engineering expertise, in industries such as:
- Manufacturing
- Construction
What systems engineers do at BAE Systems
Systems engineers play a key role at BAE Systems as they carry out the systems integration of major engineering platforms and services. They are responsible for the top level systems integration of engineering as seen on one of our whole engineering programmes, such as the new Eurofighter Typhoon entering service with the Royal Air Force.
- Naval Architecture
-
What is it?
Naval architects design and build complex modern ships.
Where do they work?
You will find naval architects working in a range of maritime engineering environments, from the design of power boats for racing, high specification for cruising and in the North Sea oil industry.
What naval architects do at BAE Systems
Naval architects play a critical role designing the Royal Navy's latest warships, from the Type 45 destroyer now entering service, to supporting the design of the new planned Queen Elizabeth aircraft carriers, which will be the biggest naval ships ever built in the UK.
