Introduction

Welcome to the Parent and Guardian area of the BAE Systems Education Programme Work Experience website.

The aim of this area is to provide support for parents and guardians who have children that are interested in finding out more about engineering as a career choice.

The Work Experience website has been developed to provide young people with as much information and support as possible to help them to make an informed choice when considering placements for work experience at a BAE Systems site.

If your child has expressed an interest in following a career in engineering, then there is a whole host of websites that they can explore to find out more information. There are many engineering companies that offer work experience, and if there isn’t a BAE Systems site in your area, they should speak to their Careers Practitioner in school, or do some research in your local community. Set them the task of looking in to what different types of engineering you can do – they might be surprised to find opportunities in the most unlikely of businesses.

Whilst your child is doing their work experience, they may be given a pack to complete to highlight their learning. If they have, encourage them to fill the pack in and talk through with you what they have done. There will be a tremendous sense of achievement when they realise just how much they have learnt.

Once they have finished their work experience, talk through the experience they have had and establish what areas of their work experience they felt gave them the greatest sense of achievement and enjoyment. With this knowledge, set them the task of researching what careers are out there which would help them to be most fulfilled.
