Work Experience

Who can apply for Work Experience?

Work experience placements are usually offered to students aged 14-16 years.

Certain sites will consider applications from Students who are 16 to 19 years old, however this is dependant on which BAE Systems Site the pupil wishes to attend.

If in doubt, please contact the Customer Support Team on 01772 677277, or via the Contact Us link or send an e mail to baesystemshr@baesystemshr.com

Which BAE Systems’ Sites offer Work Experience?

The list of sites which will consider work experience applications is on a drop down list on the Work Experience on line application form.

If the site is not listed, it is either because they are not offering work experience placements, or that the placements have been fully allocated for this year

What is the work experience application process?

If not already done so, the School / College are required to register on the BAE Systems Education Web Site

See section SCHOOLS & COLLEGES - How do I register my School / College with BAE Systems? / Can I register if I am not a School / College?

Once registered, the School / College are required to submit an application for each of the Students who have requested a work experience placement

You will receive an acknowledgement that the Student’s application has been received and is being considered.

When completing an on line application, full details regarding the Student’s educational / career aspirations, should be entered, along with any hobbies / or interests that they have out of school. This is to ensure that BAE Systems have sufficient information to enable them to make a decision regarding the application request.

BAE Systems receive a significant number of placement requests and these are reviewed against business priorities and project commitments. As such, it is not always possible to accommodate all applications.

Due to the level of administration - we require an application to be submitted at least 6-8 weeks, prior to the requested start date.

Alternatively – the school contact can log onto the secure area of the website and select Request Work Experience  - then give the Student the link provided to enable the Student to complete their own application. Please note that this link expires after 21 days.

New links are issued daily.
You may supply this link to more than one student if necessary.

Can a parent apply on behalf of the school / college?

Certain Schools/ Colleges no longer offer work experience (due to lack of funding). In these circumstances, a parent can apply on the Student’s behalf.

To request the Parent Application process, please contact the Customer Support Team on 01772 677277, or via the Contact Us link or send an e mail to baesystemshr@baesystemshr.com

Is there an alternative way to apply for Work Experience other than applying online?

No. BAE Systems will only consider applications which have been submitted via the on line application process

Are all Work Experience applications accepted?

Not all placements can be fulfilled as the sites receive a significant number of applications. BAE Systems endeavour to meet most requests. However, due to operational and/or business priorities it may not always be possible to accommodate all placements.

What hours are Students expected to attend during a work experience placement?

For the majority of sites – placements are Monday to Friday (There are a few exceptions to this and the Student will be advised of these, when their application has been accepted and Confirmation details are issued to them.)

During this time pupils should arrive on site approx 8.30 to 9.00.

Finishing times will be dependant on the actual work area that the Student is attending.

The Student should discuss start and end times with their named host, prior to the placement.

Students should not be expected to be on site more than 37 hours per week

How do I know if my application has been approved and accepted?

Once the site have considered the application details, and made their decision, an email is sent to the school contact to advise if the application has been accepted or declined.

Please note that due to the administration involved this may take a number of weeks from the application date.

If I have been advised that my Work Experience application has been approved and accepted what do I do next?

Nothing. An Information Pack will be e-mailed to the school contact prior to the placement start date.

This pack will advise the contact details of the person on site who will be hosting the placement and any other relevant information.

Do BAE Systems offer Work Experience during the School Holidays?

BAE Systems usually only offers Work Experience Placements in planned curriculum time, as supported by the school / college. Placements are not generally offered during School Holidays, however this is dependant on site and the age of the student.

Please contact the Customer Support Team on 01772 677277, or via the Contact Us link or send an e mail to baesystemshr@baesystemshr.com

Can I apply for Work Experience at a Site that is not the closest to my School or College?

BAE Systems normally only consider requests from Students to apply to the site that is closest to their School/ College . However, in exceptional circumstances, students may be allowed to attend a placement at other sites. This is up to site.

In these circumstances, it is the responsibility of the student to cover any travel and accommodation costs incurred. BAE Systems are not responsible for any of these costs

Do Students need to provide a Birth Certificate with their on line application?

There is no requirement for a Student to provide a Birth Certificate during the on line application process.

If a Student’s placement is accepted by site, the Student will be advised in their confirmation e mail, of the ID documents which they will need to take with them on their first day

I am having problems accessing the online application form, what do I do?

Ambassador Visit Requests

Who are Education Ambassadors?

Education Ambassadors are BAE Systems employees who volunteer to act as inspiring role models to young people. They visit schools and help students appreciate that STEM subjects can be fun and show them the potential opportunities that are waiting for them in the world of work.

How can an Education Ambassador support my school / college?

Ambassadors can visit your school to support you in a variety of ways. Examples of this could be to give talks on career opportunities within an Engineering company, to support and deliver activities in a STEM club, supporting Business Enterprise days, providing a stand at a careers fair, and maybe even support delivering lessons giving a real world context to the subjects that are being taught. We will endeavour to support as many requests as possible but we cannot guarantee that an Ambassador will be available, or that it would fall within the remit of the activities we would endorse.

I would like a BAE Systems Ambassador to support / visit a School Event (eg Careers Fair / STEM activity)

Schools / Colleges may be eligible to request an Ambassador Visit only if they are registered BAE Systems Schools. (See Schools / Colleges : How do I register my School / College with BAE Systems?

Log onto the Teachers Section and select Request an Ambassador Visit

Follow the instructions and simply complete the form to request a visit from an Ambassador in your area

If the request is accommodated - the Ambassador will liaise direct with you to finalise the event arrangements.

We receive a significant number of Ambassador Visit applications and we endeavour to meet most requests.

It is not always possible to fulfil everyone's wishes, due to project commitments and business priorities.

Our Education Ambassador Programme exists to help support our Education Programme, which has four clear objectives:

To help meet our future skills needs

To support and complement government education policy

To support our employees volunteering

To improve our corporate reputation at both a local and national level

The Education Programme has a clear focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) agenda. Key elements of the Education Programme include:

  • Education Ambassadors
  • An annual Schools Roadshow tour of the UK
  • Work experience
  • An education website with a host of online resources
  • Partnership (With the Royal Air Force and The Royal Academy of Engineering)
  • Sponsorship (The Big Bang Science Fair and the National Science Learning Centre)
  • Commitment to building employability skills locally (Prince's Trust sponsorship)
  • Support for the Smallpiece Trust and Arkwright Scholarships

  • A commitment to lifelong learning
Who are Education Ambassadors?

Education Ambassadors are BAE Systems employees who volunteer to act as inspiring role models to young people. They visit schools and help students appreciate that STEM subjects can be fun and show them the potential opportunities that are waiting for them in the world of work

Who can apply to be an Education Ambassador?

BAE Systems employees in the UK can apply to be an Education Ambassador

Our Education Ambassadors come from all areas of our business; not all of them are engineers. We have apprentices and graduates on the programme as well as more experienced employees

How does a BAE Systems Employee apply to be an Ambassador?

To register as an Ambassador please go to:

http://www.baesystemseducationprogramme.com/ambassadors

Click on 'Become An Ambassador' and follow the instruction, enter all details and submit.

An acknowledgment from the Education Partnerships Team will follow with further instructions.

What commitment is required from an Education Ambassador?

Each Education Ambassador should be committed to giving a maximum of 3 days per year (and up to six in MAI) to their ambassador activities. This will normally be in normal school hours, but may exceptionally be during an evening or weekend.

Does an Education Ambassador need any clearance to work in schools / with young people?

We ensure that each Education Ambassador is cleared through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS, previously CRB) before they start working with young people

Please note that when you complete your Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks you'll sign up as a STEMnet Ambassador. You may be contacted by the local Education Business Partnership / STEMnet to support events in local schools.

What support is available to Education Ambassadors?

A wide range of resources are available to Education Ambassadors, depending on their interest and experience. We want to ensure that their time is well spent in schools and that the visits are equally valuable for the business and schools alike.

The Ambassador section of the BAE Systems Education website will contain all the information an Ambassador will need (or signpost them to an answer), either as someone who is just joining the Education Ambassador Programme, or an experienced Education Ambassador.

Code of conduct

We want to ensure that our Education Ambassadors set the highest standards at all times in schools. Therefore we would ask that all communications you have with schools are exemplary, that appointments are kept on time and that you are dressed smartly. This may ideally include wearing corporate/branded polo shirts.

How does an Education Ambassador become involved in the various activities?

1.     Schools support

This is the most common way to be involved in the programme.

Schools can request Ambassador support via the Education website. It may be a request for support on a particular date, or it could be just a general invitation for someone to visit their school when it's convenient for the Ambassador.

These requests go directly to the central Education Partnerships Team, who either forward it to the local on site Education contact or direct to the Ambassadors on site (This is dependant on the process of each indivual site / Business Unit)

Once a decision is known as to whether the request is to be supported, the school is contacted with the reply.

Further guidance is given to the Education Ambassador re the next steps.

See “I am an Education Ambassador and have been approached directly by a School / College, requesting support – What do I do?

2.     Supporting a roadshow performance

Once the Roadshow schedules are finalised you can access the BAE Systems Education website, and see which schools will be visited. You can then either request to visit a particular school, or you may be asked by our education team if you'd like to support the Roadshow teams at one of the schools.

You will be introduced to the students and invited to support the workshops that follow the performances.

3.     Supporting major events

The Big Bang, Farnborough Airshow and RIAT are just some of the large scale events that BAE Systems support, and which require Education Ambassador input. Trade shows and launches also fall into this category.

You will be notified of these events either by the central Education Partnerships Team ,or your local on site Education conatct

I am an Education Ambassador and have been approached directly by a School / College, requesting support – What do I do?

Sometimes, schools will approach an Ambassador directly, or make a request to a business unit. To enable us to monitor all education activities we undertake, all requests for support need to be submitted via the education website.

If you do get a direct request for help, please ask the school to go through the website application process, naming you if you're happy to support that school. This way we can carefully log and record the exact extent of the Education Ambassador Programme. It's very important that we know who has visited which school and when, and also what activities were carried out.

We want to discourage ad hoc arrangements. We want to provide support and ensure that you are properly covered by insurance. We can only do this if we have prior knowledge of any activities you may be planning.

Do I need to record any Education Ambassador activities?

We want to ensure that we have an accurate record of all of our Education Ambassador activity. When you have supported an activity, please register the details on the Ambassador Activity Log (access by logging onto the Ambassador Secure area on the Education Website)
